On Wednesday, June 7th, The South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) lashed out against a Pakistan government crackdown on media freedom, Daily Times wrote.
“The media is directly under attack. The new rules could have a chilling effect on Pakistan’s civil society,” Mr N Ram, the Chairperson of the commission, and Mr Najam Sethi, its General Secretary, said.
President Pervez Musharraf granted the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) extra powers on Monday after criticising coverage of the suspension of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. PEMRA can now seal the premises or confiscate the equipment of television and radio channels, and suspend the licences of offenders. The decree also sharply increases the fine for violation of rules.
The rules came in to force as private television channels Geo, ARY-One and Aaj accused the authorities of blocking their transmission because of their coverage of the political crisis.
Police have also registered cases against about 200 journalists for holding a protest against the decree in Islamabad on Monday in defiance of a ban on rallies.
