New media is gathering people

The Indonesia tweetup meeting few days ago maybe one good indication that new media have the power to gather people. The meeting is a casual meet up between Indonesia Twitter user (well, not all Indonesian, actually).

Ok. I’m now waiting for the bigger new media event: Pesta Blogger.

Cuil, the fastest search engine

SORRY for not making an exact comparation with other search engines. It’s a qualitative analysis anyway. But, Cuil is worth to look and try.

Epaper Kontan and Kompas

WHILE wonderin’ why Kortem released its out of date epaper, two prominent newspapers Kontan and Kompas launched their a-rather-new-technology epaper.

However, the two release have different displaying issue compare to the traditional PDF viewing, using Softpress technology. It reminds me of Zinio, actually. The critique is, navigation is a clutter. It takes minutes to zoom in and that’s a pain in the ass for an avid surfer like me :P

Well, is it a good news or a so-so? The fact that it’s going to be a payed service is quite disappointing, though.

Epaper: out of date feature from Koran Tempo?

A couple of days ago, Indonesia ’s one of the most respected newspapers Koran Tempo launched Epaper, which is basically an e-book service. As their official blog said:

I cannot say that this is a breakthrough in (new) media business. First, because a PDF ebook technologically does not offer any new features. Second, it’s a late decision since one of their competitor such as Media Indonesia has done it long time ago (just check out the Format PDF link on the top of the page). Not to mention the Kompas Gramedia group with its megaportal.

However, I will appreciate it if they make this feature free forever :)

Mengapa menulis (blog)?

Muhammad Saleem, kontributor di ProBlogger memberikan alasan kenapa dia (dan kita, semestinya) menulis blog. Berikut ini ringkasan sekaligus terjemahan bebasnya.

Gunakan nama asli ketika ngeblog

Alasannya? Silakan baca di sini.

What’s “new” about new media?

The first is that communication is no longer one way. Sure, we had letters to the editor and you could have your own public access television show, but for the average media consumer, there was no real chance of being heard before New Media. That’s definitely new for most of us. Secondly, the time compression is phenomenal. When I was editing magazines, we’d spend a month doing the work it takes to put out the publication and then wait two weeks for printing and shipping before anyone could even read our work. When we were lucky, some comments would find their way back to our desks. Today, you post, you get hit. That fast. Sweet. That’s new.

US presidential candidates lack of technology knowledge

It’s sadly clear that US current leaders have little understanding of technology and why it’s important to our economy and culture.

Networked journalism

Jeff Jarvis has written an interesting piece about why a what so called “citizen journalism” is better termed “networked journalism”.

“Networked journalism” takes into account the collaborative nature of journalism now: professionals and amateurs working together to get the real story, linking to each other across brands and old boundaries to share facts, questions, answers, ideas, perspectives. It recognizes the complex relationships that will make news. And it focuses on the process more than the product.
