Old Media Is In Trouble - Really?

ikram — June 21, 2007 / 2:46 am

I once wondered whether the newspaper are being killed or no. On August 24th 2006, a London-based weekly news magazine The Economics wrote a provocative-titled article “Who Killed The Newspaper?” but if we look at a report by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), the newspaper sales are increasing by 12.93%. So are they being killed or no?

While waiting for the final answer to show up, here is another perspective. On March 26th 2007, Oliver Reichenstein wrote an article saying “old media is in trouble”. The article said that there were 10 major misconceptions than hinder newspapers to join the new media party. You might want to check it up.

Myth1 : We pay for printed content Fact 1: News content was always free Myth 2: There is not enough money in online ads Fact 2: Newspapers don’t care about online ads Myth 3: Newspapers need on- and offline identities Fact 3: Newspaper need one identity Myth 4: Newspapers need closed archives Fact 4: Closed archives destroy access Myth 5: Newspapers pages need to burst with stuff Fact 5: Readers want nicely presented information Myth 6: People are stupid, Journalists are smart Fact 6: The collective is smarter than you Myth 7: Journalists=professional, bloggers=smearers Fact 7: Bloggers are journalists Myth 8: The web is just a trend. No need to panic. Fact 8: Change or die Myth 9: Without paper journalism&democracy die Fact 9: Social news is democratic news Myth 10: Newspapers need to become social networks. Fact 10: Newspapers need to become wikis

So again, let’s wait for the final answer to show up. Please click here to read Oliver’s full article from Information Architects Japan and of course, I’ll be glad to hear what you think about it.
